Myōman-ji Temple Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan

It is a temple with beautiful cherry blossoms and azaleas, including the Snow Garden, one of the Three Famous Setsugetsuka Gardens.

Myomanji Temple (妙満寺), the head temple of the Kenbon Hokyo sect, was founded by Nichiju Shonin in 1389. Honbo’s “Snow Garden” is said to have been built by Matsuo Basho’s haiku teacher, Matsunaga Teitoku, and was once counted as one of the Three Famous Setsugetsuka Gardens. Inside the temple, the bell of Dojoji Temple, known for Kiyohime Anchin, is enshrined.

The Nichiren Buddhist Myomanji Temple far to the North of Kyoto has wonderful views of Mount Hiei. There is a concrete copy of the famed stupa at Bodh Gaya, India, where the historical Buddha gained Enlightenment and a graceful statue of the Buddha within.

Myomanji has pleasant grounds of raked gravel to take in the fine views from the steps of the main hall.

Myomanji was founded by the Priest Nichiju in the 14th century and moved to its present location as redevelopment took place in the Teramachi Nijo area of downtown Kyoto.

  • Get off at Kino Station, about 5 minutes on foot
  • A five-minute walk from Kino station (Eiden Line). Twenty minutes on foot from the last stop–Kokusai Kaikan–on the Karasuma subway line
