History of Korean TV Dramas

Korean TV drama, referred to as Korean drama, is one of the representatives of Hallyu culture, which was born in the 1960s. In 1945, South Korea became independent from Japan’s colonial rule. After the Korean War ended in 1953, South Korea entered a relatively stable period of development. In this environment, South Korea established several radio and television stations in the 1960s, and began to produce and broadcast romance films.

On January 19, 1962, the first Korean drama, “I Want to Be a Man” produced by KBS TV was broadcast, followed by the first Japanese drama “It’s Snowing and Snowing”, the first historical drama “Children’s Wife” and the first family drama. “Stepmother” was also broadcast one after another. In 1987, MBC TV produced and broadcasted the TV series “Firebird”, which marked the birth of the mini-series genre.

In the 1990s, the development of Korean political democratization had a great impact on the production environment of Korean television organizations and TV dramas. In 1990, the Korean government revised the TV Law, reduced the scale of KBS, and adopted policies to encourage private TV stations and cable TV stations. At the end of 1990, the private SBS TV station was established, and the production of TV series became more social and more competitive.

In 1992, “Jealousy” broadcast by MBC opened the curtain of a new type of Korean drama – youth idol drama, and the subsequent TV series “Spark of Love”, “Doctor Brothers” and “Xingmengqiyuan” continued this style, and won favored by many young audiences. During the same period, sitcoms have gradually become one of the most popular types of TV dramas for audiences. At the same time, family dramas are still popular, and dramas such as “The Men of the Bathhouse Boss”, “What Is Love”, and “Watch and Watch” all hit record highs. very high ratings. The prosperity of idol dramas and family dramas also contributed to the “Korean Wave” trend that gradually formed in the late 1990s.

Institutional improvement

The introduction of the “pre-production system”, compared to just holding a script of 1-2 episodes or just a few pages of the story outline, and filming the TV series carefully in advance, can indeed improve the work in terms of details and computer post-production.quality. However, the result will not always be perfect, and you will often regret “just change it” after the broadcast.

Korean TV dramas are based on ratings, and usually change the plot and ending according to the audience’s reaction. In this case, pre-production is practically impossible. Many pre-produced dramas have poor ratings. Such as: “Special of My Life” (2006), “Flying Dance” (2008), “2009 Outsiders Ball” (2009), “Friends, Our Legend” (2009), “No. 1 National Road” (2010), Paradise Ranch (2011), etc. Increase the weight of advance production and change production practices to improve the overall quality of the work.

Improve the old practice of rushing to shoot or staying up late to shoot with a segmented script (because the script is not finished, and only the written script is on hand), and film a certain amount in advance. From the perspective of long-term development, the “double insurance” can only be achieved by combining the production model of each Korean drama with careful preparation in advance and the strategic flexibility of each Korean drama.
