Chubu Region (Japan)

This is the Chubu region in Japan. In Japanese, Chubu means the central part, so Chubu is located on the central part of Japan’s largest island Honshu. In Chubu, there are nine different prefectures.

Chubu Region Map With Prefectures (Nine Prefectures)

1. Aichi ( あいち ) :

In the Aichi prefecture, the capital is Nagoya. Aichi prefecture is also famous for the Toyota Company. It is also famous for there expo in 2005.

2. Shizuoka ( しずおか ) :

The Shizuoka prefecture is south of the Chubu region, near the Pacific Coast. Its capital city is Shizuoka City, and its most famous product is tea.

3. Gifu ( ぎおふ ) :

The Gifu prefecture is the biggest prefecture located in the center of Honshu. The town Takayama is a beautiful town in the mountains, and Shirakawa-go, a small village in the forest are Gifu’s main attractions. Its most famous activity is fishing.

4. Niigata ( にいがた ) :

The Niigata prefecture is close to the Sea of Japan in the Chubu region. Its famous for its high quality rice, coastal and mountainous scenery, and its fireworks during the summer, and skiing in the winter. The capital of Niigata prefecture is Niigata city.

5. Nagano ( ながの ) :

Nagano prefecture is in the mountain area of the Chubu region. The capital of Nagano prefecture is Nagano city. Nagano prefecture is known for hosting the 1998 Olympic Winter Games.

6. Yamanashi ( やまなし )

The Yamanashi prefecture is west of Tokyo in the Chubu region. The north of Yamanashi prefecture is Mount Fuji and the Fuji Five Lakes. The capital of Yamanashi prefecture is Kofu.

7. Toyama ( とやま )

The Toyama prefecture is next to the Sea of Japan. The capital is Toyama city. From this prefecture, you can see the Northern Japan Alps.

8. Ishikawa ( いしかわ )

Ishikawa prefecture is next to the Sea of Japan. The capital city is Kanazawa. Kanazawa, also has the Kenrokuen Garden which it is known for.

9. Fukui ( ふくい )

The Fukui prefecture is located next to the Sea of Japan. It is known for the Eiheiji Temple, and Fukui Dinosaur Museum. The capital of Fukui is Fukui city.

Chubu Travel Attractions (よびもの )

Mount Fuji ( ふじ さん )

In the Chubu, the most famous attraction is Mount Fuji. Mount Fuji is the tallest mountain in Japan. It is 3,776 meters and is surrounded by 3 lakes. Mount Fuji is an active volcano and last erupted in 1706.It is also located between the Yamanashi and Shizuoka prefecture, but can be seen from Tokyo, and Yokohama, Mount Fuji is also a symbol of Japan, and every year at least 200,000 people climb Mount Fuji to see the sunrise during the months July and August, when its said to have the least amount of snow.

Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route ( たてやま くろべ アルパインみち )

The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is a passage through the Northern Japan Alps. The route is famous for it high snow walls. The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route was completed in 1971 and connects Toyama City ( Toyama Prefecture ) and Omachi Town ( Nagano Prefecture ). The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route was also famous for the beautiful scenery of the Tateyama Mountains during the autumn.

Shirakawa-go ( しらかわご )

The Shirakawa-go is located in the mountains that is between the Gifu prefecture and the Toyama prefecture. It is famous for their traditional gassho- zukuri farmhouses. At the Shirakawa-go, you can do things like stay overnight at the farmhouses, go to Ogimachi Village, and watch the Winter Light Up.

Kamikochi ( かみこうち )

The Kamikochi is a famous resort in the Northern Japan Alps of the Nagano prefecture. It is known for the most amazing mountain scenery. In the center of Kamikochi, there is the Kappa Bridge, which lets people hike. There is also wildlife at the Kamikochi, such as, monkeys, birds, and sometimes bears during the autumn.

Yamanouchi( やまのうち )

Yamanouchi is located north of Nagano prefecture. Yamanouchi is famous for its natural hot springs. It also has the largest ski resort, which held the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics, and a monkey park which allows monkeys to bathe.
